Redcoat Chapter of the Daughters of the British Empire
Redcoat Chapter meets at 7:00 PM on the third Wednesday of the Month
At the International Center for the Upstate,
First floor, City Hall, 206 South Main Street, Greenville, SC.
Our meetings last approximately 2 hours. This includes our business meeting, British-style
buffet refreshments, and perhaps a short program of interest - such as a craft demonstration, “show and tell”,
quiz, or guest speaker. Members are encouraged to suggest programs of interest for future meetings. The refreshments are provided
by hostesses drawn from the membership list on a rotating basis.
The membership currently stands at 28. Our ladies represent all parts of the British Isles
- Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales as well as the British Commonwealth. In addition, we have American members whose husbands,
parents or grandparents were British.
Redcoat enjoys the reputation of being a “fun chapter”.
Activities are many and varied. They have included coffee mornings, restaurant diner parties with spouses and guests, picnics,
participation in parades – such as the Greenville Scottish Games Parade, and the Greenville Christmas Parade, a Christmas
party and Christmas luncheon, a Guy Fawkes Bonfire Party, a Burns Supper, attendance at international community events such
as ‘Passport to Decadence’, out-of-town trips and more.
Redcoat Chapter uses a number of fundraising methods. One is the on-going sale of sweatshirts,
aprons, bags and blankets all bearing the DBE logo. The chapter has also held golf tournaments, car boot sales, and fashion
shows.
Redcoat
Chapter’s Fundraisers have benefitted many local charities including Meals on Wheels, Safe Harbor, and Cancer Society
of Greenville County.
Members
have given talks to local schools on various subjects, including life in London during the blitz. Support has also been given
to the Greenville Scottish Games and Highland Festival through volunteering and taking part in the colorful Games Parade.
Redcoat ladies are always on the lookout for new ways to support
their local area.
